This Veterans Day we celebrate the men and women of our armed forces and welcome a special guest who chose a military career over a business career and has risen to among the highest ranks in the U.S. military. Brigadier General Matt Smith’s story and his lessons on leadership make for the perfect program on such an important day.
Matthew D. Smith
Brigadier General, US Army, Dep. Director of Ops, Readiness & Mobilization HQDA, G-33
Brigadier General Matt Smith will join us from Headquarters Department of the Army where he serves as the Deputy Director of Operations for the Army. Matt has been a Georgia Army National Guardsman for 25 years and has served on active duty for our state since being mobilized for the invasion of Iraq in early 2003. Prior to being mobilized, Matt was as a marketing manager for IBM, earned an MBA from Goizueta Business School at Emory University, and worked as a stock broker for Morgan Stanley. Matt will share some thoughts with us about the importance of Veteran’s Day and the nation’s support of the military, and a few broadly applicable leadership lessons he learned the hard way. Matt will be joined by his wife of 17 years, a native of Atlanta, Mrs. Laura Balser.
